Safety & Compliance

Safety & Compliance

At Shaukat Marine Services (SMS), safety is not just a requirement — it is a core value embedded in every operation. We maintain the highest international maritime safety and environmental standards, ensuring the protection of our crew, clients, cargo, and the marine environment.

International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Compliance

All SMS vessels are built and operated in full compliance with IMO regulations, including mandatory double hull construction for tanker vessels. Our operations adhere to MARPOL conventions for pollution prevention and SOLAS requirements for safety of life at sea.

ISM Code — International Safety Management

SMS maintains a comprehensive Safety Management System (SMS) in accordance with the ISM Code. Our system covers hazard identification and risk assessment, emergency preparedness and drills, incident investigation and corrective actions, continuous improvement through internal audits, and management review processes.

TMSA — Tanker Management & Self Assessment

We participate in the OCIMF Tanker Management and Self Assessment (TMSA) programme, demonstrating our commitment to best practices in tanker operations. Our TMSA assessment covers management leadership and accountability, recruitment, training, and competence of personnel, reliability and maintenance standards, and cargo and ballast operations.

ISPS Code — International Ship & Port Facility Security

All SMS vessels and operations comply with the ISPS Code, maintaining appropriate security levels. Our security measures include vessel security plans reviewed and approved by flag state, designated Ship Security Officers on every vessel, security drills and exercises conducted regularly, and access control procedures at all operational areas.

Environmental Protection

SMS is committed to minimising our environmental footprint through double hull vessels preventing oil pollution, oil spill response equipment onboard every vessel, strict waste management and disposal procedures, ballast water management in compliance with BWM Convention, and energy efficiency measures to reduce emissions.

Training & Competence

Our crew undergo regular training programmes including STCW certification and refresher courses, ship-specific familiarisation, emergency response and fire-fighting drills, oil spill response and clean-up procedures, and health and safety awareness programmes. Every crew member holds valid certificates as required by international conventions and flag state regulations.

Zero-Incident Commitment

SMS maintains a zero-incident safety record across all bunkering and fuel transport operations. We achieve this through rigorous pre-operation safety checks, continuous monitoring during all cargo operations, comprehensive post-operation reporting, and a culture of safety where every team member is empowered to stop unsafe operations.
